There was a time when sailing was all about staring off into the distance, looking like you are deep in thought before extending a brass sight glass and barking an order to adjust the square sails. While we would love to wear one of those hats and cool coats, sailing on Indioko is slightly different.
Like many “modern” boats, we have electronic instruments that help us know what the weather is doing, where we are going, how fast the boat is moving and so on. We have been slowly replacing these as many are over 20 years old and showing their age a little bit, for the most part, everything does what it needs to.
Part of our renovations has been to migrate as much as possible away from the legacy SeaTalk1 communication network to the more modern and flexible NMEA2000 (n2k) network. This slows our equipment to integrate with newer devices and ultimately make them appear smarter. It’s a challenging migration but we have just about finished it through the use of some special adapters.
Here’s a list of what we currently have installed on Indioko, a Leopard 47 from 2005.
