There’s something deeply satisfying about a freshly painted boat: a hull that gleams, decks that look crisp and clean, and that moment you step back, hands on hips, and think, “She looks better than new.”
Of course, what you don’t see in that moment is the week of sanding dust in your hair, aching shoulders, and the slow realisation that 90% of painting a boat has absolutely nothing to do with paint. Like most jobs afloat, the glossy finish is the reward; the hard work comes first.
Over the years we have completed hundreds of repairs to our Leopard catamaran, SV Indioko, from gel coat touchups and replacing instruments to complete balsa core replacements and fibreglassing our keels back together. And the same rule always applies: do the preparation properly and everything goes smoothly. Rush it, and you’ll be in a world of trouble further down the line, thinking “I should have done that better” every time you step onboard.
