Sailing across an ocean is a bucket list item for many sailors, but doing it with a short-handed crew can bring extra challenges. I wrote an article for YachtWorld to share some top tips for others looking to undertake long passages offshore without a large crew.
We have sailed over 20,000 nautical miles in the last five years, on our 2005 Leopard catamaran, Indioko. We have cruised through the Caribbean and Central America and more recently crossed the Pacific Ocean with only ever just the two of us onboard – we’ve never taken on a third crew member, even when we’ve undertaken weeks-long passages. We’ve learned how to work together in challenging situations and how to support each other in those difficult moments. Learn from our mistakes and enjoy the freedom of sailing offshore without a large, busy crew onboard.
